Ethan is crib-free. We’d been talking about the switch for a few weeks now, but figured with all the snow on Saturday, that it was a good oppotunity to stay indoors and make the swap. So I assembled the toddler bed that we had been given by our neighbors down the street a couple of years ago. All went very smoothly and looked good. So I decided to take apart the crib and get it out of his room so that there was no confusion. Check. And now, come on in Ethan. Check out your new digs. He was so excited. He looked at it, and then went running to Simon’s room and pointed to his bed, as if to say, look, I have a bed just like yours now! He ran back and forth for a while, and then got on his bed, first to lie down, and then to jump on it.
That’s when we noticed that there was a problem. Apparently the last slat (or whatever they’re called) that holds the mattress off the floor was missing from both ends of the frame. There were several making up most of the length of the bed, but not the extreme ends. So he kept falling through the bed when he walked at either end. Knowing that kids sometimes stand on their beds, we dismantled the whole thing, cut up some of the available wood in the basement, and made two slats on the fly. But all we had that was a half inch thick was particle board, probably left over from the 70s. Not very sturdy. In fact, once the pieces were in, I gently pushed down on the matress at the foot end and the thing broke in half. But so far the head piece has held, reinforced, as it is, with duct tape. What a hassle.
Anyway, now I have to buy some real wood so that I can dismantle his bed next weekend too. Still, he is in his bed. There have been no transition issues. He hasn’t taken it upon himself to explore his room at nap time, as Simon did before. He just lies there, happy. This could be temporary, but I think it’s just another example of how things are so different with each child. Ethan now has Simon to learn from too. Which is a good thing.

My little bug is two today. He has grown from a “tiny” little boy to a massive hulk of a little man. He loves french fries, trains, diggers (giggers), jay-jays (plains), and seeminly everything else too. He is so happy and loves his older brother, who he screams at, fights, wrestles, and laughs with. God bless you, little boy, we all love you incredibly much.

COMPLETELY SUCK!!! This is the last freaking time I ever buy one of these. I don’t care how great they are for the environment, nor how long they last, nor how much money I will save. You wanna know why I’ll be saving money? Because you’re stinking newfangled light bulb doesn’t shed light on anything. Ergo, it uses no electricity! St Thomas Aquinas, pining over his Summa, had more light to go by, and he had a single solitary candle. And he saved electricity too! I thought that buying the equivalent of a regular 100W bulb would do the trick. But it’s worse than a regular 60W bulb. “Provides soft white light.” It’s certainly soft. Losers! And I’m a bigger loser for falling for your loser scam. Again.
Gina says we can just use them for the outside light. Well, OK. Sounds good. But we have three of them, and there’s already another one out there from some prior experience being conned. So that’s at least four of them. Times 9 years per bulb = 36 years of a “softly” (i.e., dimly) lit front yard. That means I’ll be freaking 72 years old by the time I climb out of the hole on this one. As if getting conned weren’t depressing enough, now I have to contend with my mortality. Thanks Philips! Really needed that.

Simon has taken to climbing our one climbable tree of late. He has also taken to falling out of it. As for Ethan, he is pulling himself up on everything these days. A prelude, we hope, to walking. He about way too many pounds too heavy to carry anymore. And he’s, what, 10 years overdue?
